What is LegalTech and How Does It Work?

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, technology is transforming various industries, and the legal sector is no exception. The emergence of LegalTech, a term combining "law" and "technology," has brought about significant advancements in the way legal professionals operate. From streamlining processes to enhancing efficiency and accuracy, LegalTech is revolutionizing the practice of law. In this blog post, we will delve into what LegalTech is and explore how it works. LegalTech, which is short for Legal Technology, is different from LawTech (I have a separate article on this topic). But in short, LegalTech is for lawyers and LawTech is for clients.

Understanding LegalTech:

LegalTech refers to the application of technology to improve and enhance legal services. It encompasses a broad range of technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, automation, data analytics, cloud computing, and blockchain, among others. These technologies are used to address various challenges faced by legal professionals, such as managing large volumes of data, conducting legal research, automating repetitive tasks, and enhancing the delivery of legal services.

In layman's terms, LegalTech is basically the use of software that makes attorneys or lawyers more efficient by cutting down the amount of time taken on performing tasks. A lot of a lawyer's time is spent on administrative tasks, contract review, contract drafting, billing, and e-discovery. The LegalTech sector has developed software to assist attorneys with their growing workload. By going through the subsectors of the LegalTech industry we can get a clearer picture of how LegalTech works.

How Does LegalTech Work?

Legal Research and Analysis:

LegalTech has significantly transformed the way legal research is conducted. AI-powered platforms can analyze vast amounts of legal data, including case law, statutes, and regulations, to provide comprehensive and relevant information to legal professionals. These platforms utilize natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to understand and interpret legal documents, making it easier to extract key insights and identify relevant precedents. Check out some of Westlaw and Thomson Reuters’ legal research AI tools. Utilize their free trials and you will be blown away by the amount of time you’ll save. Some legal research companies allow you to outsource your legal research entirely to them. Like using ChatGPT, you ask a question, and within 24 hours – a week you will have a great legal brief.

Document Automation:

Lawtech simplifies the process of drafting legal documents through automation. Document assembly software allows lawyers to create customized legal documents by simply inputting relevant information and selecting predefined clauses. This not only saves time but also reduces the chances of errors, as the software ensures consistency and adherence to legal standards. Great software you may want to check out is RobinAI and HighQ.

Contract Analysis:

Contract analysis is a time-consuming task for all legal professionals. Even the highly experienced ones. LegalTech leverages machine learning algorithms to analyze contracts and extract critical information, such as key terms, obligations, and potential risks. This helps lawyers identify potential issues more efficiently and make informed decisions and corrections to the contract. Here again, I have to recommend RobinAI for your day-to-day contract review needs.

E-Discovery:

In litigation cases, e-discovery involves sifting through a vast amount of electronic data to identify relevant evidence. LegalTech utilizes AI-powered algorithms to expedite the e-discovery process by automatically categorizing and prioritizing documents based on relevance. This not only saves time and resources but also improves the accuracy of the document review process.

Practice Management:

LegalTech offers practice management software that helps law firms streamline their operations. These platforms assist in managing client information, tracking billable hours, scheduling appointments, and organizing case documents. By automating administrative tasks, lawyers can focus more on providing legal services, resulting in increased productivity and client satisfaction. My personal favorite has to be CARET, though Clio is also great. CARET is more customizable and has more unique but useful features than Clio.

Legal Analytics:

LegalTech leverages data analytics tools to provide valuable insights into legal trends, case outcomes, and judge behavior. By analyzing historical data, legal professionals can make data-driven decisions, assess risks, and develop effective litigation strategies. Legal analytics also enable law firms to optimize their pricing models and improve profitability. I’m not yet at a place in my career to be focused heavily on legal analytics beyond studying precedents. I have read on Westlaw that they are working on an AI tool that falls under this category. As soon as it’s out I’ll review the software on my YouTube channel. Check out my YouTube channel if you are looking for practical demonstrations of legal software.

LegalTech is transforming the legal profession by harnessing the power of technology. From streamlining legal research and automating document drafting to improving e-discovery and enhancing practice management, LegalTech offers numerous benefits to legal professionals. By embracing these technological advancements, law firms and lawyers can leverage efficiency, accuracy, and improved client service. As LegalTech continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly reshape the legal landscape, making legal services more accessible, efficient, and effective.
